Design Wall Giveaway

Last summer I attended "Quilt Wyoming" in Casper. One of the classes I took was taught by Kathleen Moorhead Johnson of August Wind Quilt Designs.

I only completed one block in class. As I was digging through the UFO bin, I came across my Prairie Windmill quilt blocks. All the sub-units were made, so I decided this would be perfect for my April UFO project.

The colors in the photo of this post are more true. Doesn't it look like Neapolitan ice cream? My favorite when I was growing up!

Here's a shot with the border fabric:

I'm planning to have this top pieced by Friday for TGIFF.

And the Giveaway

While at Quilt Wyoming, I bought an extra copy of the pattern for a giveaway. Now that I've (mostly) finished my quilt, I can tell you Kathleen is an excellent pattern-writer. Here is a photo of her Prairie Windmill quilt from her website, August Wind Quilt Designs.

Kathy points out, "The trick is choosing two different colorways and choosing fabrics from light to dark."

If you'd like this pattern to sew for yourself, please comment on this post and tell me what two colorways you would choose to make "Prairie Windmill."

  • Giveaway ends Saturday, April 26 at noon MDT.
  • International entries welcome!
  • If you're a no-reply commenter, please include contact information. If I can't find contact information for the winner, I'll choose a different winner.

Tomorrow is Earth Day. I have a new tutorial for an easy-to-make market bag, come back and see!

  2. You know, I don't know what two colorways I would go with. Let me see, i think some green and maybe...not red, but perhaps something fallish, like orange and or yellow.

  3. Ooh, I love the ice cream colors! Hmmm, what would I choose? Maybe blues and greens, like an ocean. Or maybe some high contrast, like yellow and grey. Or maybe...

  5. Oh I knew I forgot something at the grocery store today, ICE CREAM!!! LOL, I adore the first one cause it is in "my" colors. The pattern is really neat too. Would make a good soldier quilt as well. Thank you

  6. I don't know what colors I would use. I really like your ice cream one, but the bluse and purple is pretty also. Maybe in green and red for Christmas. Thanks for the chance to win.

I'd love to make it in greens - maybe with pink??

  9. <----lurking, but is now HUNGRY for some ice cream :)

  10. I love the blue and purple in the photo from Kathleen's website, but I think I would go with darker shades of purple. I also liked Kate's idea of blue and green for an ocean look. The gradation from light to dark gives is such a 3-D look!

  11. I also enjoyed neopolitan, but I always tried to eat each flavor separately one at a time! I love the purple and blue, but I think I would go for a patriotic color scheme, and try to do red, white and blue. yes I know that's three colors, but white doesn't really count, does it?!

  12. And now I am hungry for ice cream. Specifically, a chocolate turtle pecan DQ Blizzard. The colors in your quilt are lovely, if you can minimize the cravings. It's a great pattern, one which I might make in purples and greens/blues. I seem to have acquired a lot of purple as a result of all the nieces that have gotten married in recent years. And my greens seem to reproduce by themselves.

  13. If I win, I'd probably change my mind several times but right now I say orange and turquoise.

  14. I'd like to try blue through to purple with lime green contrasts, or maybe some browns with a green contrast (going with your ice cream theme - a chocolate mint ice cream).
I would love some right now - I have no idea what "chocolate turtle pecan DQ Blizzard" is but OMGosh it sounds divine. A Canadian girl who worked with us made Chocolate Turtles for Christmas one year....yumm...OK back to the salad.

  15. I like the color combo too. I'm so glad you were bold enough to go with a brown. It looks great. I'm with Dorothy on the patriotic and Barbara on the orange and turquoise for another colorway. Those were the first two ones I thought of. As for the ice cream, I compromised and went with a strawberry shortcake for dessert...it kinda looked like neopolitan. :)

  16. Oops...forgot to say I really like the border too. It's phenomenal what they are doing with batiks these days, and your quilt is the perfect application of that one!

  17. Your quilt is going to be gorgeous when finished! I also love the color combo of the original pattern as purple is a favorite. I would try purples and greens for this quilt. Thanks for the giveaway! k(dot)castanette(at)hotmail(dot)com
