Monday Mystery

It also should be BOM-day, but with two mysteries in the works, the BOMs are going to fall by the wayside today.

First up, Step 2 of Bonnie Hunter's "Easy Street":

It is no secret that I do not like Flying Geese.  Please don't tell me "try this ruler" or "try this technique."  Believe me, I've tried them all.  And I still don't like Flying Geese.

This time, I'm pressing the seams open.  I haven't sewn any together yet, but I will say, they come out nice and flat!

All 128 purple "geese" are sewn and pressed, I'm just trimming off the dog ears.  Notice my metal cookie sheet, a la Bonnie Hunter?  Great way to keep the pieces organized until they're ready to be stored in plastic bags awaiting their turn in the quilt!  (BTW, I'm linking up to Bonnie's "Easy Street" linky here.)

I'm also working on a mystery quilt at my fav LQS, Ruth's Stitchery.  This one is by Debbie Caffrey, a very talented and prolific mystery quilt designer:

I'm only one step behind on this one, but it's the second to last step!  I need to be ready to sew all the blocks together by Wednesday.

I'm using Civil War repros for this iteration of the mystery.  Notice the baggie of flying geese?  Maybe that's why I'm behind on this quilt!

I actually made this quilt last year, but I don't want to spoil the fun for other mystery quilters -- so tune in again next week for the big "reveal!"

  1. I'm not a fan of flying geese either!! No matter how I try they just never ever turn out evenly nice and rectangular!

  2. Ask me to make flying geese and I used to 'fly' fast in the opposite direction. I am getting better at them now but still need more practice.

  3. I actually dread making them... and have decided I need to do a flying geese top to get over it. Hopefully wonky to straight geese that is.

  4. Agreed. I am not a big fan of flying geese either. I am making a sawtooth star quilt now and have lots of geese left to make. One of these days I want to do a geese border on a quilt, so I will get lots of practice then. I know you said not to mention rulers, but for me, the Nifty Notions rulers have made a big difference. Today I am going to sew something much easier, a little churn dash wall hanging. I hope you have a day full of blessings!

  5. I like flying geese but can't do this mystery quilt as I don't have time. When are the link ups for the Braid in a Day quilts? I'm anxious to see the quilts!

  6. I have trouble getting the FG the right size with Bonnies technique, but I prefer it to all those little wasted triangles. I prefer the one with the large square and making 4 at a time. If BH has more FG in this quilt I am going to do it that way before cutting.

  7. Seems like none of your fans like flying geese. I think i'd go foundation piecing myself. I do love the purples in Easy Street - geese or not!

  8. That's quite a flock of flying geese! I'm not a big fan either but not sure why. Perhaps because I haven't made that many, only as part of a single block for a swap. Hope you get caught up in time!

  9. Geese are looking good, as are your other projects.

  10. Wow! I don't think I would have the patience to press all the seams open. I'm sure yours will be quite nice when you are done.

  11. I love flying geese...the way they look...not necessarily the 'making' of them...a few at a time is fine...but I do love them when they are all done.

  12. Every so often, I pull a much cherished scrap from my stash, and remember how much I miss Ruth's (we used to live up in Monument, but moved out of state in '03). Your geese in both projects are looking good, and I absolutely adore the CW repros you're using in the Caffrey mystery!

  13. I had to laugh as I read your flying geese comment. I just cut the material for like 500 flying geese, which now that I think about it, was probably not the great thing I have decided on, especially since I haven't made a one before, lol. I am sure it won't be long until I feel the way you do if they are as impossible as everyone. I do however LOVE to press my seams open. Everyone tells me that I must pressed to the side or the block won't come out right, but man it comes out sweet when I press them open!
