What's Wrong With This Picture

Has this ever happened to you? You get a quilt top all finished, pressed, hung to photograph -- and notice "hey, something is wrong."

No, it's not that the top edge is missing -- that's folded over the deck railing so I could take the photo.

It's the flying geese in the outside border. The background and colored prints are reversed! I can't believe I got the quilt top completely finished without noticing this mistake!

Sigh.

This is the 2012 Fat Quarter Shop "Designer Mystery BOM" quilt. It's made from Bonnie & Camille's "Vintage Modern" fabric, a collection I loved so much I bought the entire fat quarter bundle. And made four extra blocks so the quilt would be big enough for my queen sized-bed.

Guess it's not really finished, huh?

"Designer Mystery" is my first UFO finish for 2014 -- I promise I'll have those flying geese flying by February 1. Are you working on your UFO #7?

  1. This is an awesome quilt even with the backwards geese! Every time I see one of these I wish I would have joined in. Good work on the, almost, finish and thanks for linking up with TGIFF!

  2. I thought that was part of the design. When I saw that I really thought that was a clever twist for the border. Doesn't look like a mistake to me at all. Looks like pattern enhancement if you ask me :) Great quilt

  5. I agree with everyone else - it's beautiful - so fresh looking. I looked and looked and couldn't spot the mistake until I read on and you said, and even then I couldn't work out which corner as I had thought it was part of the pattern! Beautiful fabric, beautiful quilt! Gill (sorry it always says my husbands name - but it's an improvement on Anonymous!)

  6. I thought the reversed flying geese was intentional. It really adds a fun twist to the boarders. I hope you decide to keep them.

  7. I'm really not seeing what the problem is with the flying geese! Don't mess with it - it looks great!

  9. I think it is beautiful and I thought you did it intentionally. NO ONE but you will notice!

  10. At least you noticed BEFORE it was quilted....It doesn't look wrong to me, but it will to you I know.

  11. This is what makes it unique - a design element!! At least they are uniformly "wrong" and not just one! :)

  12. It doesn't look like a mistake to me. Looks gorgeous!! We just moved into our new apartment yesterday so I'm hoping I can finish January's UFO but if not I'll finish two in February and just keep claiming this move. Haha ;)

  13. I would definitely call it a "design decision." Variation is also part of design, and what better one than reversing colors! I like the quilt.

  14. I would never have known the difference! I think I would leave it as is and consider it a design element like others have said! It looks beautiful!

  15. I agree - our "mistakes" often look fine to observers. As far as UFO #7, we were in San Antonio for a week and just came back. So far #7 is on the table and I just look at it every day! Hopefully I will be motivated next week.

  16. Oh man...at least it is in the border and not the middle!

  17. I'm not seeing the mistake on this one but I'll believe you! I've finished my number 7 project but I haven't uploaded my photo to my computer yet so best do it and try to remember to email you!

  18. I did this one too but found that the reds would not work in the bedrooms. I am going to use them to cover seats in the kitchen when we get further along in that reconstruction.

    1. And I gave away the big bed to someone whose house burned in the Black Forest fire, so I'll have to use it as a really big wall hanging! Oops!

  20. I think it looks wonderful. Are you sure it''s an error?

  21. Well that is really funny because I would have never noticed and I would have thought it was part of the pattern. Each block is so beautiful. Really nicely designed quilt and of course the fabric is wonderful too. Love everything about it.

  22. Hahaha, totally something I would do. I'd probably leave it that way though!
