Design Wall Monday: A Hat Trick

You've probably heard that Sinta and Sherri are hosting "Vintage Schnibbles" this year. The first Schnibbles quilt is "Hat Trick."

This is one of the first "Schnibbles" patterns, so if you don't have it in your collection you can download the PDF version from Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. here.

When I think of "vintage," I instantly think "30s reproduction fabrics."  I have quite a collection of 30s repros -- nearly 20 years ago when the 30s reproductions first came out, I bought a fat quarter of each fabric.  Soon the number of prints was overwhelming, so I had to back off.  But I still have two bins of 30s fabrics!

What fun to dig through the bins and find light-and-dark prints to make the 20 little nine-patches.  My problem is the setting squares.  Should I use light prints?

Or plain muslin?

I only have ten blocks complete, so they will probably be rearranged in the final quilt.

What do you think?  Print or plain setting squares and triangles?

  1. I prefer the plain muslin, easier on my eye and the nine patches are more distinct.

  2. From the photo evidence I would agree - is there something a little less stark or are you using white since the backgrounds are white? (Not always easy to tell in a photo) OR could you use a small pattern like the bottom right setting square - ie mainly plain - tiny print - I think that would be perfect...

  3. I think it is too busy with all the prints. I prefer the plain, or you could try a tonal.

  4. I agree that more prints tend to distract from the pattern. I like to use solids or the tonals and prints that give a solid look.

  5. Plain, definitely. The blocks just get lost in the prints, IMO.

  6. Such cute little 9 patches -- I vote for a light plain background - it lets the blocks shine. Now I gotta get working on mine.

  7. I think the plain fabric is a must. You need somewhere for the eyes to rest on a quilt and the prints are quite busy. I actually think the plain fabrics allow you to see all the fabrics in the other blocks whereas with all the blocks in print you don't know where to look.

  9. I also vote light solids.... and you have inspired me to pull out my stash of 1930's fabric and do something with them. Thanks.

  10. I like the muslin. I think... really highlights the nine patches. Unless they're all as light as the bottom row ;)
