I Spy A Friday Finish

Being a Grandma is the best thing about getting older.  I'm "Marmee" to my two darling granddaughters.  I am having so much fun sewing "girly" stuff, as I raised only boys!

GD2 turned one year old this week.  To celebrate, I made (finished)  an "I Spy" quilt that I had started when my youngest niece was 2.  She is in Middle School now!

I think when I started collecting fabrics for "I Spy," I must have purchased a bundle of 4" square fabrics.  No other way to explain how many "fish" blocks there are in this quilt!  The border is made of Kona Cotton strips from their new colors.  They are arranged in the order of an old Girl Scout Song, "I Can Sing a Rainbow."

Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue . . . I can sing a rainbow.

And bound in a black and white stripe -- thanks Ginny of Ruth's Stitchery for finding just the right stripe for me!

If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you can see some of my favorite blocks:  in the upper right-hand corner is a US Navy aircraft carrier (Uncle Jacob's ship).  Two blocks to the left of that is a fish on a yellow motorcycle (Uncle Justin rides a yellow motorcycle).  In the bottom row is a bear using a computer (Grandpa is a computer expert).

I wish I had thought to add some photos of all of GD2's grandparents and great-grandparents.  They all live a distance apart, and that would help her learn who everyone is, since she sees them so seldom.  Also, how could I not add a "sewing machine" block to represent Marmee?

One more photo so you can see Mr. Blue Suede Shoe's nice ankles:

Linking up to "Richard and Tanya's "Link a Finish Friday" and

I have lots of novelty fabrics left over from my "I Spy," would you like them?  Leave one (please!) comment on this post before next Friday and I'll let the Random Number Generator select a winner.  Be sure to include contact information if you're a no-reply commenter!

  2. I love the blue suede shoes, a very nice quilt hanger you have there! I'm in a swap here in Oz on a Facebook page at the moment for I Spy fabrics so I hope to make one at some stage. We're swapping 5 x 10" blocks so I can either leave them larger or cut them into 2x5" charms. I'm thinking I might make a jar quilt if there are some prints which fit and then use the rest some other way. My kids are 17 & 20 so don't really need to make one, just want to! I love yours!

  18. I love I spy quilts! When my son was little he had a ring with photo holders on it -- big plastic ones, designed for a child -- and we put photos of his far away relatives in it. It was a great thing -- I wonder if they still sell those?

  25. I love the way you added those special "personal" blocks - a great idea - though it's as shame you didn't add the pictures and a sewing machine - next time?? I'm about to receive some blocks for an I spy quilt which I plan to add to..so some different fabrics will add extra variety (though I think I have worn out Mr RG)

  26. Love the blue shoes. haha. I did the same thing I started a quilt for my sisters' boyfriends grand daughter and didn't get it finished and now she is 3. Oh well some day.

  27. In my last quilt, I got bored with meandering, so I started stitching the names of our family into the squares and I told Jacob about it. So now, whenever I use that quilt, I have to show him his name. I think he is the perfect age for an I Spy quilt, I will have to get on that!

  56. Thanks for the chance to win those I-Spy novelty prints. All the fathers and grandfathers of my grandnieces are fishermen, so fish squares would work just fine for an I-spy quilt! My brother has already taken some of the grandnieces cane fishing too! Your stripe binding is wonderful - excellent choice. This is very generous of you.
